Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located on the banks of the Bagmati River. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a sacred pilgrimage destination, especially during Maha Shivaratri, when thousands of devotees gather. The temple complex is adorned with intricate pagoda-style architecture, numerous Shiva lingams, and vibrant cremation ghats where Hindu funeral rites are performed. Walking around, you will see ascetic sadhus, ancient inscriptions, and devotees engaged in rituals, creating an atmosphere of deep spirituality. A short drive from Pashupatinath leads to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest and most significant Buddhist stupas in the world. Dominated by its massive white dome and all-seeing Buddha eyes, Boudhanath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major center of Tibetan Buddhism. The stupa is surrounded by monasteries, prayer wheels, and lively streets filled with Tibetan shops and cafés. Walking clockwise (kora) around the stupa while spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras is a common practice among devotees. The area is especially enchanting in the evening when butter lamps are lit, and monks engage in prayers, making it a peaceful and meditative experience.
